How Unklian.co.uk

was constructed.

Building a website for beginners.

There are three stages to making a simple website:

1. The Site.

Purchase a Domain Name. (Something to call your site).

Purchase a Hosting Package. (Somebody to host your site).

I bought both these for £28.00 for 2 years from www.Streamline.net

2. Web Page Design.

Either learn HTML (the language in which websites are written) or,
download a HTML Editor to design your website more easily.

I downloaded Trellian Webpage from:-  www.trellian.com

3. Upload (FTP) your site.

This is a method of moving your website design onto your host server.

I downloaded FTP Surfer from:- www.whispertech.com

Designing the webpage.

I have designed a simple website with 3 pages with links to each other.
Once these pages are established and linked together,
it is easy to modify the contents or add pages to suit your own purpose.

Open the Trellian WebPage program folder system.
Create a new folder for your new website. I have called this “New Website”

This is where all parts of the website will live.
Having all parts in the same folder makes linking pages etc. much easier.

In This folder, Create another folder called “doc”.
This is to hold buttons for linking pages, images etc.
Again, this will make linking parts of the website much easier later.

Start the Trellian WebPage Program.

Click “File” then “New”.

The Wizard will open.

Fill in some details. Click “Next”.
Choose the style of the front (index) page.

Click “Next”.

I have left the Link Settings blank as I will make my own buttons.
If you want words for links, fill in the options.

Click “Next”.

Again, I have left the Headings blank. If you want to, fill in the options.

Click “Finish”.

You will be presented with your first blank page.

The first thing you should do is to save this page as “index.html” in the Trellian “New Webpage” folder.

Add text, etc. to the page.

Start another few pages and save them as page2htm, page3htm etc. in the same folder.

Using Photoshop, I made buttons to link to page 2 & 3.
I also made a button to return to the index (front) page.
These are saved as jpeg files in the “doc” folder.

Going back to the index page, the links to page 2 and page 3 can be inserted.

Click “Insert” , “Insert Image” from the “doc” folder, insert the Page2 and Page3 jpeg images.

Re-save the “index.html” page.

Open Page 2 and add the images Page3 and FrontPage.

Open Page 3 and add the images Page2 and FrontPage.

Content can be added to the pages.
Now to make the links work.

Open the index page. Right click on the Page2 button.

Click on “Create Link”.

Click the button to the right of the URL box.

Double-click Page2. Click “OK” The link is established from the index page to Page2.

Repeat these steps to establish links between all pages.

Index to Page2 and Page3

Page2 to index and Page3

Page3 to index and Page2

Click the “Preview” button and check all the links work.

Click the “Internet Explorer” button to see how the pages will look on the internet.

If all is OK, it is now time to upload the information to your host. In this case,  Unklian.co.uk

Open the FTP Surfer Program.

Double-click “New Connection”. You will be presented with this box. Fill in the details.

The address should be “ftp” before your site name.

Click “OK”

Double-Click “New Website”. You will see this screen.

Open the htdocs folder.

 Right-Click and select “Upload”.

Navigate to your “New Website” folder in Trellian.

Ensure that there is a “doc” folder. If there isn’t, create one.

Select all the page files and Click “Open”. This will upload the pages to your website.

Double-click “doc” to open the folder. Right-Click, select Upload and navigate to the contents of your Trellian “doc” folder.

Select all the items and click “Open” to upload the files.

Close the FTP program down.

Now hopefully…….

Open internet explorer and type your website name and all should be working.
